téléphonique. À 14 ans, je concevais un piano électronique à partir d’une radio AM/FM.

Aujourd’hui, je conçois et réalise des circuits électroniques pour des artistes.

Je vais présenter mon travail de conception et de réalisation de circuits électroniques et de

systèmes mécaniques sur mesures et de programmation Arduino pour les artistes

principalement depuis 2010.

At 3-years old I took apart my brothers’ toys.  At 10 I installed my first telephone line.  At 14 I conceived of an electric piano based on an AM/FM radio. Today I conceive and construct electronic circuitry for artists.

I will present on my work designing and making electronic circuits, custom mechanical systems and Arduino programming for artists, principally since 2010.

Artiste audio-visuel, Johann Baron Lanteigne s’intéresse aux médias digitaux. S’identifiant au

mouvement Glitch, sa motivation oscille entre une quête de perfection technologique et l’abus de ses

défauts qui sont encore trop contemporain pour être appréciés d’une manière nostalgique. Passionné

d’architecture, de photographie et d’échantillonnage sonore, il adopte le montage vidéo et la

conception de séquenceurs comme catalyseurs dans ses créations digitales. Ses œuvres instables

présentent des environnements ambigus, à la fois communs et surréalistes qui sont à la fois en

ascension et en décomposition.

S é q u e n c e DESCRIPTIONsequence

De la Roland 808 à la suite de montage d’Adobe, les séquenceurs prennent toutes les formes pour nous

aider à façonner des œuvres temporelles. Je m’intéresse en particulier à la conception de séquenceurs

performatifs et à la composition en temps-réel qu’offrent ceux-ci.

Dans le cadre de Dorkbot, je vous présenterai une patch Jitter que j’utilise pour générer des visuelles en

temps-réel et ensuite l’utiliserai en tant qu’exemple pour illustrer le potentiel de Ranseq, un séquenceur de ma création.

Allison Moore is an artist, educator and cultural operator. Originally from Vancouver Island she is based in Montreal and has produced projects in Brazil, Cuba, Australia, and the UK.  Allison achieved a BFA degree with Honors in Interdisciplinary Arts and Video Production at the University of Concordia in 2005.

Presentation

Video Terrariums is an ongoing series of multi-screen video installations depicting various animated landscapes  and referencing scenic tableaux or as one might find in a natural history museum illustrating a variety of habitats.

Allison Moore est une artiste et commissaire indépendante qui fait des recherches se situant à l’intersection de l’art et de la science. Elle a obtenu un diplôme de l’Université Concordia en arts médiatiques et elle s’intéresse particulièrement à la biologie de l’évolution, à l’installation, aux arts performatifs ainsi qu’à la réalisation de films documentaires. Allison Moore a participé à de nombreux projets de création notamment au niveau de la vidéo et du théâtre de marionnettes. Elle habite présentement à Montréal et a réalisé des projets en Équateur, aux ïles Galapagos, au Royaume-Uni, en Europe et en Amérique du Nord.

Voila votre compagnon robotique aéroporté et votre aide. Spiri est un robot autonome, branché à l’Internet, et qui fonctionne avec Ubuntu Linux et ROS (robot operating system). Il est muni d’un micro-processeur ARM quad-core 4Gb.

Spiri is your airborne robot companion and helper. It is an autonomous, web-enabled device that runs Ubuntu Linux with ROS (robot operating system) over a 4Gb quad-core ARM processor.

You are free to program Spiri to do anything you imagine, while relying on our API and built-in tools, including those that let Spiri fly on its own and avoid collisions.

Spiri comes with excellent sensors and cameras. It even has depth perception facing forward. GPS, feature recognition, optical flow, ultrasound, and inertial measurements are a few of the tools Spiri uses to orient itself and navigate. These features are modelled in our simulator—a free sandbox in which you can test your maneuvers and programs before you let Spiri try.

Pleiades Robotics founder and CEO Patrick Edwards-Daugherty was born in 1974. He grew up in Halifax, and went to university for theoretical physics at McGill, and then at Cambridge. He started Pleiades in 1999. The company developed e-learning systems and virtual worlds until recently. Since 2011, Pleiades has been working on a flying robot, Spiri, which is designed for programmability, versatility, and autonomy.

Scientifique devenue artiste photographe, Hannah Palmer est fascinée par les absurdités du monde qui l’entoure. Elle concentre son travail sur les interactions et les influences que la caméra peut porter envers ses sujets.

Aude est une artiste multimédia, illustratrice et motion designer vivant à Montréal. Elle travaille actuellement comme motion designer àMoment Factory. Sortant d’une éducation à la fois scientifique et artistique, elle s’inspire régulièrement de cette dualité dans ses créations personnelles et professionnelles.

 

DÉMARCHE DU PROJET

La création du Touche-o-mathon est née du désir de créer des contacts, de rapprocher les gens. Bien que la technologie ait tendance à dégrader nos contacts humains dans un cadre social, le mariage de l’art et de la technologie peut cependant augmenter les relations humaines.

Le Touche-o-mathon tente donc de créer une innervation, en invitant les personnes, comme des électrons libres, à se rassembler et à se connecter pour capturer un moment, fermant ainsi le circuit pour capturer l’instantanéité du moment. C’est de la capture de ces moments que se construit la mémoire collective à la base de l’enracinement des sociétés humaines.

ARTISTS’ BIOGRAPHY

A former scientist turned photographer, Hannah Palmer is fascinated by the absurdities of the world she lives in. She focuses her work on the interactions and influences the camera can create with, and towards, the subjects it encounters.

Aude is a multimedia artist, illustrator, and motion designer. She currently works as motion designer for Moment Factory. Having completed an education in both science and the arts, she takes inspiration from this particular duality for her personal and professional creations.

 

PROJECT STATEMENT

The creation of the Touchbooth is born from the will to create contacts, and bring people closer to one another. Although in a social context technology often has the tendency to degrade our human contacts, the union of technological means and artistic concepts can end up magnifying human relations. Therefore, the Touchbooth intends to create an innervation, inviting people like free running electrons, to gather and connect to one another in order to capture a moment. It is in the contact that the circuit closes and captures the instant. For the artists, these captured instants are at the very basis of collective memory and the sentiment of belonging in human societies.


 

 

 

Basé sur une exploration de matériaux, le travail de Josée Brouillard cherche à repousser les limites du médium vidéo, tout particulièrement le mode de diffusion. Le support technologique est son premier intérêt. Josée construit des dispositifs à partir de composantes électroniques modifiées ou fabriquées sur mesure. Ce processus se rapproche du bricolage.

Based in materials exploration, the work of Josee Brouillard aims to extend the limits of the video medium, in particular modes of diffusion. These technologies of display are her primary interest. Josee constructs alternative displays from modified or custom made electronic components. This process is similar to bricolage.

Thank you for joining our first re-inauguration of Dorkbot MTL!

IMG_0128Well, that was interesting.

Our first Dorkbot meeting in 6 years and I couldn’t be happier. Our host, Oboro was fantastic and very welcoming. We even had a nice little sound track of the choir singing down the hall. Our first presenter, Mike Hornblow, brought us straight to Japan using Google street view, toured us around the globe and ended with video’s of our own hands- all while presenting some uber fresh research being conduced at Concordia’s Senslab. Our second presenter, David Raby_Pepin, shared a group of event based installations that playfully had audiences question concepts such as immediacy, presence, digital representations and notions of “liveness”. Claire Kenway, our third presenter introduced us to Windcatcher, her electronic music making instrument powered by the sun and wind. We weren’t sure if we would have a fourth presenter but he arrived half way through with a rather large, heavy looking box. and his guitar a crayon really was the cherry on the cake. Video’s of all the presentations will be up shortly. Thank you to everyone who came out to the meeting. Please share with your fellow Dorkbot inclined friends and we look forward to seeing you at the next Dorkbot- [the second Tuesday of the Month, every two months]. Next Meeting: June 10th, 2014.

What better way to start Dorkbot off on the right foot than with a project from from Senselab, housed within Concordia’s Hexagram? The research conducted by our first presenter is so fresh, it’s yet to be mapped by a Google web van.

Project Description:
OmegaVille is a multidisciplinary project in development at Senselab, Concordia University. It uses Google Street View to speculate on notions of planetary urbanism, and how this may be experienced and embodied. I’ll explore a few ideas using video and GSV navigation, performance and mobile media. I’ll discuss some events coming up for the project, and wrap up with an exercise in audience participation, using smartphones to generate an impromptu multichannel video installation.

BIO:
Michael is an artist from New Zealand / Australia, with a background in performance, video, media art, and critical writing. This is informed by recent doctoral research-by-practice in the Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory at RMIT, Melbourne; and now post-doctoral research in relational art and philosophy at Senselab, Concordia University. He has presented work in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Africa, Canada, and Europe; including recently the International Symposium on Electronic Art in Sydney.

Project Description: 
The presentation covered a few events exploring the process of documenting participants’ presence and actions with the intention of rebroadcasting the material directly in the event space. The documentation component requires the use of instant and digital photography, webcams and digital film while the rebroadcasting occurs through visual projections. Physical installations are conceived to receive the projections and integrate them in a spatial setting.

BIO:

A recent McGill Architecture graduate, David has been active in the fields of architecture and art making over the past years. He has worked and studied architecture in Montreal, Canada and Venice, Italy. He has also been running Funkshion Creation, an art/event practice, alongside 2 other colleagues for the past 2 years and a half. He recently parted from this practice, however, to start Vocabulaires Visibles, his own art/event practice through which he explores the relation between spatial installations, object making and artistic performance.

Project Description:

If the wind could sing to us, what would it sound like? Would it sound magical, delicate, and melodic? Perhaps it would have a polyphony of voices which articulate its fundamental source and the objects it comes into contact with, infusing it with rhythms, bass, and sweet melodies? Whether its song is a roar or a whisper, a gust or a flurry, with Windcatcher, the wind has a voice.

Windcatcher is an art installation that exemplifies the creative potential of wind as a source of sound, energy, beauty, and inspiration. Three kinetic sound sculptures become the sources of sounds produced as a result of wind interacting with different physical materials and electronic interfaces. These three specially designed instruments: an Aeolian harp, chimes, and musical wind turbine, together create music played by the wind. The ‘wind orchestra’ produces melodic, harmonic, and percussive sounds, each instrument having its own unique form and function As an artwork, Windcatcher challenges negative perceptions about wind energy and highlights the majesty and beauty of nature and the wind itself: sounds created and manipulated by the undulating ripples of the wind.

BIO: 
A multifaceted artist, Claire’s creativity explores the intersections between sound, space, sensation, emotion, and environment. Classically trained in violin as a child, she has been performing internationally as a DJ for more than a decade. Since moving to Montreal in 2008 to complete her Master’s in Communications at
Concordia University, she has been active in musical composition, live performance, and the creation of interactive installations. Articulating messages of sustainability through interactive motion and sound, her installations employ sensing technologies in combination with sound synthesis, creating music as a result of kinetic movement. Her first project, ///Friction, involves three bicycles that produce and manipulate sounds. This was followed by Acousticaquatica, an underwater art experiment that explores the
relationship between humans, technology, sounds, and fish. And Windcatcher, where she designed and built three musical instruments played by the wind. Musically-speaking, her heart lives deep in the underground: she founded the nomadic Blackbox parties in 2011, released her debut album ‘Under a Midnight Moon’ on Montreal’s Archipel Musique in November 2012, and has recently begun putting out a plethora of esteemed releases as well as performing her own music live, addicting new audiences to her unique brand of dark, deep, intellectual and alluring electronic music.
